Sometimes even the font office will provide a little humor for our faculty.  While you watch this please remember we don't do this for a living.

We hope everyone safely enjoys their break and spends time with their families.  We'll see everyone back at CHS after the New Year.

Dragon Tribune Update

We were just notified of the recent update for the Dragon Tribune.

We have a student whose sport is polo that was interviewed for this issue. You can catch up with the latest trend on Facebook.  Read about our teacher at CHS who recently went on a dig. There's an interview with a student who saved her mom's life. A funny story of our foreign exchange student from Finland who went to the state fair and discovered Texans' fascination with all things deep fried.

Dragon Dive/Swim for the Cure

For the first time, our Swim/Dive team will be swimming and diving to help support breast cancer research by raising money through a “Pink Out” meet. This year we would like to make a difference with fund raising. Each and every one of us has known and/or loved a family member or friend who has battled breast cancer.  Just within our teachers, coaches, and other staff employers, with grace and courage, they are facing this challenge.

As young men and women athletes, our students would like to invite everyone to attend this meet on December 2, 2010.

Congratulations Abound at CHS

While we are headed toward a Fall break next week I wanted to point out some amazing accomplishments recently for CHS/CSHS:

Jennifer Cruze was recognized last night as the DFW Werner Schulz award winner for Outstanding High School Chemistry and was recently named the Southwest Werner Schulz winner to be recognized in New Orleans in December.

Mandarin students were recognized as the group award winner for the Cheng & Tsui Superstar Karaoke contest.  Our students were able to beat out several college entries for this award.

Volleyball completed the season with a record number of wins and advanced to the Regional Quarterfinals where they faced a tough Marcus squad in a 5 game battle.

Football is still "Protecting the Tradition" and plays this Saturday at Cowboys Stadium at 2:00 PM.  We hope to see our community turn out for this battle against Colleyville Heritage.

Everyone at CHS is proud of our students and their amazing accomplishments.

Play it Forward

Don't forget our CHS students will sponsor "Play it Forward" at this week's Varsity Football game Friday night at Dragon Stadium. They will collect used sporting equipment, clean and refurbish it, then pass it along to kids that otherwise would not be able to play sports due to equipment needs or costs.

This is a wonderful activity sponsored by our kids to benefit others.  As we continue to ask them to work for our society this is truly servant learning.

Green Out Friday

We want to remind everyone that this Friday night will be our Green Out football game.  CHS still has several shirts available to purchase for this event.  All spirit wear items are available each day at lunch in our Dragon Shop.

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

Carroll ISD is excited to be teaming up with KISD and GCISD for an October 19 forum called The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly: a taxpayer's guide to the public school funding crisis. It begins at 7 p.m. in the Auditorium of Carroll Senior High School.

The overall goal is to inform taxpayers and educators about school budgeting and to initiate a call to action at the grassroots level to have taxpayers send lawmakers in Austin a strong message in support of public education.  Following a general 45-minute presentation on school finance, representatives from each of the districts will be available to meet in face-to-face break-out sessions with their respective constituents.

Questions about this free, public event may be directed to the Communications/Public Information Offices in CISD.

Thank you in advance for helping us all Make Education A Priority!

Email Down 9/7/10 and Curriculum Night Wrap Up

Just so everyone is aware our email system and teacher webpages will be knocked off line tonight for service.  If you need to reach a staff member and need additional information please feel free to contact us at school tomorrow.

We'd also like to thank all of our community members for stopping by tonight to visit with our staff members.  Curriculum night is a welcomed experience and we appreciate everyone working with our staff to make this successful.

Nestle Very Best in Youth

Nestle has recently contacted us regarding a parternship to recognize young people who are making a positive difference in lives other than their own.  With the wonderful activities that we see daily at CHS we're hoping several of our students take part in this application process to be named one of the "Very Best in Youth."  The winners will receive several outstanding awards including $1,000 to donate to the charity of their choice, and an all-expense paid trip to Los Angeles, CA this summer for the awards ceremony.

Any student may complete their online application at http://verybestinyouth.nestleusa.com/ before the November 2, 2010 deadline.

Curriculum Night

We look forward to seeing everyone at CHS tonight from 6 to 7:30 PM for our curriculum night.  Our teachers will be running through a brief schedule with parents to discuss their classes.  Please make sure you get a copy of your child's schedule before you arrive.

In addition, we will have forms ready for parents to complete for our new Family Access/Dragon Access.

Despite the rain we hope to see everyone tonight.

Athletic Success to Start the Year

Congrats to both of the Freshmen Volleyball teams! The A-team played in a JV tournament last weekend and won the whole thing! The B-team played in an A-team tournament and won their Bracket. These girls really are amazing and help spread pride daily from the court.

In addition, we'd like to congratulate our Cross Country program on a wonderful start to their season at the Greenhill relay.  The teams once again showed why they can Protect the Tradition each and every year.

Open House On the Horizon

Curriculum nights are scheduled at CHS yearly during the first few weeks of school. This activity is designed for parents only (no students please). The meeting provides teachers with an important opportunity to visit with parents about grade-level and course curriculum, as well as classroom expectations.  We look forward to visiting with our wonderful parents on September 7, 2010 from 6:00 to 7:30 PM.

Please remember we tend to see about 1000 people arrive on a campus limited to parking.  If you're worried about this please arrive early.  In addition, DES will also have their curriculum night the same night so that too will eliminate some parking for those that like to walk.

We hope to see everyone soon.

Schedules on Day 1

All students should stop by CHS first thing tomorrow to pick up their schedule. Please know we've tried to minimize changes but to eliminate too many students in classes we've had to level some classes and this has changed schedules a bit.

See everyone tomorrow.

Welcome to 2010

Monday will finally bring our kids back to CHS. I can't ask for something so great. While we've been excited to have staff on campus for a week a real day is what our entire family loves. We can't expect anything but greatness and look forward to everyone playing a part.

Welcome back Dragons and stop by the office if you have any questions.

End of Year at CHS

The end of the school year is always a time of mixed emotions for everyone at CHS. On one hand, who doesn’t look forward to summer vacation? But on the other hand, summer also means saying goodbye - sometimes temporarily, sometimes permanently—to people you’ve enjoyed spending time with daily at CHS.

This year we will be saying goodbye to several teachers, some are moving and some are retiring. We will miss these excellent teachers tremendously and wish them all the best as they continue to educate our world.

One of the things I admire most about all teachers, especially all the teachers at CHS, is their dedication to their profession. Teaching is a challenging job, and teaching at the high school level in CISD can be especially demanding. To teach day in and day out, year after year, and still be able to say “I will miss it” at the end of the year speaks volumes about the excellence and never-ending commitment to our children by these wonderful people.

For our students moving on from CHS, good luck!  We expect nothing but the best from each and every person we have worked with and look for great things.  For our students that return next year...we'll see you soon.  Yes it is summer but it goes by fast and we are continuing to think about how we can help you have an excellent educational experience soon.

Parents, thank you for being our partners in this experience.  We truly appreciate your help and hope we will continue to partner day in and day out to make CHS the best learning environment ever.  You're wonderful and one of the many reasons I love to work here and like calling CHS a home.

Enjoy your summer.

Last Dragon Tribune Published

This is some of our best work of the year for our CISD newspaper students.

There is a series of stories on the front page titled "Progress the Tradition." Our students investigate improving our academic process.

With the on-line addition they have an interactive map on the front page of the newspaper to diagram where the senior students are headed.

Obviously the students are getting a handle on this new world of e-journalism and the future looks pretty bright. Hope you stay with them for the next installment in the fall.

Thank You to Volunteers

This morning we were able to honor our amazing volunteers for their help this past school year.  While we would have loved to have seen more of these amazing people today it was great to honor those that came.

CHS has been served with enough volunteer hours each week this year to amount to 2 full time staff positions.  In this day of needing every dollar to educate our kids this does wonders for our campus.  You're all truly amazing and a treasure to CHS.

One final thank you goes out to Kathy Smith, our CHS volunteer of the year.

There's more. A local kickball league is hosting Moms for Toms (shoes) charity event on May 8. The Carroll student who spent a semester in Brazil writes about soccer...Brazilian (obsessive) style, and another student writes about 101 Things to Make Yourself Happy (my particular favorite).

Teacher Appreciation

Last night I had the joy of attending an event put on by one of our local churches. The youth chose to have a dinner reception for Teacher Appreciation "On Eagles Wings." It was once again a glorious reason why so many staff truly love working with our students.

Having the opportunity to thank our many teachers is sometimes difficult but these students truly went above and beyond to prepare a meal and serve teachers across CISD for their hard work. Thank you to everyone for this event, it truly gave me another wonderful "Push" to do what is truly right and to work to excel every day for kids.

Half Way Through TAKS

Today we will have all of our students testing on various tests. We first want to thank our kids for working so well on our first day of Math testing on Tuesday. Second we'd like to thank our staff for so efficiently working with our kids to address all of their needs. Finally we'd like to thank our parents for working so well to have all students present and ready to work each day.

We certainly believe the next 2 days will work so well and we truly appreciate everyone.

If you have any questions please feel free to phone the school and we will be happy to discuss everything with you.

Rumor Control at CHS

A lot of rumors are circulating among students and parents about a threat against CHS. The rumors started after several students were talking about "what if" scenarios and then began to name specific students as part of their made up scenario. The administration is aware of this and has been working with local law enforcement and parents on this matter. Since last Tuesday, we have been checking and double checking our information, taking phone calls, monitoring internet sites and interviewing students that have been identified in these rumors. Please understand. . .we have found NO credible information that there was ever a threat against this school. This was a rumor that started and has continued to gain momentum because some have chosen to use Facebook, texting and cell phones to discuss this serious matter.
We have absolutely no facts or information to support the rumors that are going around. Some students are growing alarmed because everyone is talking about it and making the situation worse. We know some students may be genuinely scared but we want everyone to think carefully about the facts and not base your fear on misinformation. As adults and teenagers, we all have a responsibility to help make our school safe. Joking about or making false accusations about threats in school or other students will not be tolerated.

As we announced last week, we welcome students, parents or staff who have concerns to discuss them with the administration. But generally, we are asking everyone to be responsible and show strong character by stopping the rumors and calling a halt to all comments and discussion that could falsely accuse or scare students. School safety is a serious matter and local law enforcement is involved.

Thank you for being responsible and helping us put a stop to these rumors.

Good Luck on Final Day of Regionals

One of our 2 boys varsity golf teams is in 2nd place int the region 1 golf tournament in Lubbock. I had the pleasure of watching our students participate in both golf and tennis today. I'm truly proud of all of our Dragons and their performance in Lubbock.

Good luck tomorrow and we hope to see you in Austin.

Drugs and Alcohol – Latest “Trends” with High School Students

Please remember this presentation will begin tonight at 7:00 PM in the CHS cafeteria.

We invite all parents to attend this very informative meeting with our CHS School Resource Officer, Allen Smith. Officer Smith will share with our parents/community what the latest “trends” are regarding drug and alcohol use and availability with our students. Recovery Resources will also be available to talk about resources that are available to help families who are experiencing difficulty with alcohol/drug use with their teens.

While your child may not be involved in this part of our society, this is truly an important facet that we'd love for you to understand.  It may never truly impact you but it does hit close to home for us as we work with teenagers.

Success in Austin

CHS would like to thank all of our great athletes for their work in Austin this past weekend. Our male swimmers were successful by coming in 2nd place at the UIL swim meet. Our female students were also successful by turning in a 3rd place position. While I don't want to debate the UIL I believe the girls would have won first if allowed to properly participate in the last relay. Finally our wrestlers were successful by returning with a 3rd place and 6th place in individual events. Way to go Dragons we are so proud of each of you.

Thank You Students

I would like to take this opportunity to thank several wonderful students that attend classes regularly at CHS: Colton Quinn, Andreas Nauwelaers, Chase Milyo, Brian Hill, Barrett Benesh, Alissa Walburg, and Vicki Griffin.  These great students provided a wonderful service at the Board of Trustees meeting last night and led the board in the pledges.  Collectively, they have provided more than 1200 work hours of service to CHS this school year through classes with Connie Ball.

While the above named students led the verbal pledge at the meeting these next ASL students provided an opportunity to Sign the pledge at the same time: Bradley Benoit, Connor Papie, Torie Berlin, and Natalie Swart.  I would also like to thank Danita Barton for providing these students another opportunity to utilize the offerings of our ASL program.

Summer Santa

Please don't forget our Science Club is sponsoring the Summer Santa program, Feb. 8 through Feb. 12, at CHS.

We would like to encourage everyone to bring an unwrapped toy--No stuffed animals please.  There is a box outside the main office for toys to be left.

Tuesday Schedule

While speaking with Mr. Rhodes we have decided to maintain our published schedule for next Tuesday, February 16. Tuesday will be an A day much like Thursday was supposed to be marked.

After considering the events of our half day and the fact we probably lost most of our time due to weather and many concerns with our time to release, we feel it is best to start over and work with our published calendar. Obviously with Frideay being missed we will now be making up 2 days later in the semester and thus we will simply add in the A day and B day in the schedule.

We will do all we can to publish this information on the campus homepage quickly for everyone.
Please be safe and have a wonderful time with your families over this extended weekend.

Registration Information

The course selection process for the 2010-2011 school year is now available through Family Access. Please remember that each student must utilize his or her individual user name and password to select courses; students may not use their parents’ user names and passwords. If you don’t have the individual user name and password, please contact your current school’s Guidance office and they will help you with this once we return to school.

The course selection process must be completed no later than March 5, 2010.

Registration Update

The counselors from CHS and CSHS met with all of the rising freshmen, sophomores, and Juniors through their World History, World Geography, and Middle School classes during the past few weeks. They provided students with information about graduation plans, course selections, and how to select courses through Family Access. The Academic Planning Guide is posted on both high schools’ websites; this document describes, in detail, each course that is offered at both schools. It also provides information about prerequisites and about summer assignments that may be required for specific courses.

All students’ parents will receive a Connect Ed phone call when the on-line registration process is available. We anticipate that this will happen within the next week.

If you have any questions, please contact Carroll High School (rising 9th and 10th grade students) at 817.949.5620 or Carroll Senior High School (rising 11th and 12th grade students) at 817.949.5813. Thank you so much.

Welcome Dragon Additions

I’m absolutely proud to announce the arrival of 3 new Dragons to our family. Tara Peet, one of our wonderful English teachers, proudly delivered her triplets. The wonderful babies were happily born at the start of our break. Due to the early delivery the Peet family would prefer to not have any visitors at this time. In exchange they have set up a blog to be followed by everyone and it is very forthcoming with information.

 http://thethreepeets.blogspot.com/

I would also ask everyone to continue to consider Tara's and the babies quick recovery so we can enjoy their presence soon at CHS.

Welcome Back to CHS for 2010

While I know many people are sad to be back at work after a long 2 week vacation, I am excited.  It is a pure joy to get back into CHS and see our wonderful students and staff.  It truly is amazing how much you miss a place while being gone and I'm just happy to see everyone again.  I hope everyone's New Year is as exciting as I hope mine is and I look forward to many more successes at CHS.
