We would like to say congratulations to Alice FitzGerald and our STEM program on being named the 2014 Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Texas state winner.
Alice's efforts will bring CHS/CSHS $20,000 in STEM technology and help to continue to build our new program in CISD. We'd also like to wish her good luck in the National Competition this spring!

AP® District Honor Roll
Commissioner of Education
Michael Williams today noted that 14 Texas school districts are among 477 in the U.S. and Canada being honored by the College Board
with placement on its 4th Annual AP® District Honor Roll. The
Honor Roll recognizes districts for increasing access to AP course work while simultaneously
maintaining or increasing the percentage of students earning scores of 3 or
higher on AP Exams.
§ Eagle Pass Independent School District
§ Frisco Independent School District
§ IDEA Public Schools
§ Irving Independent School District
§ Katy Independent School District
§ Lake Travis Independent School District
§ Mesquite Independent School District
§ Pasadena Independent School District
§ Plano Independent School District
§ Point Isabel Independent School District
§ Sharyland Independent School District (Mission, TX)
§ Southwest Independent School District (San Antonio, TX)
§ Increase participation/access to AP by at least 4 percent in large districts, at least 6 percent in medium districts, and at least 11 percent in small districts;
§ Increase or maintain the percentage of exams taken by African American, Hispanic/Latino, and American Indian/Alaska Native students, and;
§ Improve performance levels when comparing the percentage of students in 2013 scoring a 3 or higher to those in 2011, unless the district has already attained a performance level at which more than 70 percent of its AP students are scoring a 3 or higher.
To view the complete listing of school districts
named to the College Board’s 4th Annual AP® District Honor
Roll, visit www.collegeboard.org.
The 13 districts and one charter
school in Texas that have earned this national distinction are:
§ Carroll Independent School District
(Southlake, TX)
§ Coppell Independent School District§ Eagle Pass Independent School District
§ Frisco Independent School District
§ IDEA Public Schools
§ Irving Independent School District
§ Katy Independent School District

§ Sharyland Independent School District (Mission, TX)
§ Southwest Independent School District (San Antonio, TX)
“Students in school districts across Texas are
tackling rigorous Advanced Placement courses and succeeding,” said Commissioner
Williams. “This opportunity to prepare for post secondary success in high school
pays great dividends in our education system today and for our state’s economic
future.”
In 2013, more than 3,300 colleges and universities
around the world received AP scores for college credit, advanced placement
and/or consideration in the admission process, with many colleges and
universities in the United States offering credit in one or more subjects for
qualifying AP scores.
Data
from 2013 show that among African-American, Hispanic and Native American
students with a high degree of readiness for AP, only about half of students
are participating because their schools do not always offer the AP course for
which they have potential. Trevor Packer, the College Board’s senior vice
president of AP and Instruction, notes that these 14 Texas districts are
committed to expanding the availability of AP courses among prepared and
motivated students of all backgrounds.
“We
applaud the extraordinary efforts of the devoted teachers and administrators in
these districts who are offering more students the opportunity to engage in
rigorous college-level course work,” said Packer. “These outcomes are a
powerful testament to educators’ belief that a more diverse population of
students is ready for the sort of rigor that will prepare them for success in
college.”
Inclusion
on the 4th Annual AP District Honor Roll is based on the examination of three
years of AP data, from 2011 to 2013, for the following criteria. Districts
must:
§ Increase participation/access to AP by at least 4 percent in large districts, at least 6 percent in medium districts, and at least 11 percent in small districts;
§ Increase or maintain the percentage of exams taken by African American, Hispanic/Latino, and American Indian/Alaska Native students, and;
§ Improve performance levels when comparing the percentage of students in 2013 scoring a 3 or higher to those in 2011, unless the district has already attained a performance level at which more than 70 percent of its AP students are scoring a 3 or higher.
Overall,
Texas ranked 13th in nation in the percentage of 2012 graduates participating
in AP. Over the last decade, AP participation and success in Texas have
increased steadily.

A Community Hero
We were excited two days ago to be informed one of our young ladies, Destiny Rose, was being recognized on KRLD as a "Community Hero." While our mums may go gigantic at homecoming some of our students certainly recognize this is an opportunity to help others in our community.
Please take a moment to read her story and listen to the recognition from the website.

End of 1st Six Weeks
As we begin our second six weeks we wanted to remind all families report cards will be digital this year. Please login to "Family Access" on Friday to see official 1st six weeks grades. If you need assistance please contact our guidance office at CHS for help from Kari Litwak. While we certainly believe digital is the best method we will remind all families if you want a hard copy the guidance office can also process this request.
Our students did a masterful job this first grading period and we are excited to have such a dedicated group of Dragons at CHS.

First Day of School
On Monday when our students report to start 2013-2014 school year please follow these procedures to start your day:
1. If a student KNOWS that he/she is in a 1st block class that meets at CSHS (i.e., a sophomore in basketball) the student should go to that class even though the class is not at CHS. This will include athletes and drill team students, etc.
2. Coaches/directors, etc., will allow 1st block students to leave early enough after 1st block so that they can get to CHS in time to get their official schedule (on pink paper) from the gym at CHS.
3. For students who receive their official new colored schedule at CHS and learn that their first block class is officially at the other school (i.e., freshman who are taking French I 1st block at CSHS), the student will remain at CHS for 1st block - students will report to the cafeteria area unless a parent wants to transport them to CSHS.
4. Teachers, will use new colored schedules as official schedules for students on the first and second day of school.
Good luck Dragons as we approach 2013-2014 school year and call if you have questions.

Community Service...?
Ok with the recent couple days of rain and the sun to come up soon we are going to need some major assistance at CHS in the next 2 weeks.
We would certainly welcome any student who would like to earn some community service hours on campus to come work on our front green space. Our weeds will sprout after this rain and we will need some help. Give us two hours and we'll offer water and fill out a volunteer card for you. Make this campus shine like our kids do every day.
If you're interested you may come to CHS anytime between 7 AM and 4 PM to start Monday through Thursday. For other times email Mr. Giamanco and he'll certainly find a way to meet you up here too. We can provide a bag, point you in the right direction and would appreciate your help.

Game Over Canceled
Carroll High Parents & Staff,
By now you may have heard about the shooting that occurred at Town Square this evening. While we don't have a lot of details, we know that at least one male adult from Southlake died as a result of the tragic events that unfolded. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family during this terrible time, as well as to our local law enforcement officers who are handling the investigation.
In light of this unprecedented event in our community, Carroll ISD and city officials have made the decision to cancel the Game Over mock car crash event scheduled at Carroll High School tomorrow. CISD and Southlake DPS mutually agree it is not in the best interest of our students to move forward with this emotionally impactful drug and alcohol program at this time. We also do not want to pull city resources away from the handling of this tragic event in our community.
The Game Over program has a powerful message and we hope to perhaps reschedule in the fall. We appreciate the time and effort that has gone in to the organization and planning of Game Over, but we just believe that our students would be better served with a normal routine tomorrow. It's been a difficult year on many fronts and we do not want to add to the anxiousness of students who might have heard about tonight's shooting in Southlake. As always, our amazing school counselors will be available at all CISD campuses should any students need them tomorrow.
Thanks for your understanding as we work to serve the teen students of CISD.

EOC on Horizon
Please remember April 1, 2013 through April 4, 2013 are our spring days for EOC testing for English Language Arts 2012-2013. This is a graduate level test for all students as we have discussed throughout the year and we expect our students, with effort, will be successful.
We have a unique situation on this campus because each day half of our students will be reporting to CHS at a delayed time. Freshmen will test on Monday and Tuesday and Sophomores will test on Wednesday and Thursday. If a student arrives at their usual reporting time and they're not testing, he/she will have the opportunity to study or read in the gymnasium. Buses will run on their regular schedule and four and a half hours later for the late arrival.
CHS will maintain a schedule after testing with all four classes meeting during the last 2 hours with the exception of no shuttle buses running to CSHS. We will not release a student during testing for appointments and encourage all students to be here the entire day for all classes and funding purpose.
If you have questions please feel free to contact CHS.

Dragon Tribune #5 Posted
In this most recent launch I recommend you spend a moment
tuning into the mind of a senior turning to Ben & Jerry’s for comfort on
Valentine’s Day, a story about learning to budget written by a senior providing
guidance to next year’s freshmen, an editorial about cursive being eliminated
from the curriculum at some elementary schools, or the story about National
Charity League.
The Dragon Tribune is amazing and something to read regularly.

Dragon Hockey in the Playoffs
The Varsity Hockey team needs it's noise-making, green-wearing, poster-waving fans Monday night at the first playoff game in their run for the state title.
With a third place finish in the West Division, the Dragon Varsity hockey team will compete in the Gold Playoffs, beginning Monday night at 8:30 at the Dr Pepper Stars Center in Euless ...(1400 S. Should the Dragons win Monday night, they will face West Division leader, Jesuit on Tuesday at 9:00 in McKinney (6993 Stars Way.) The winner of that game will play for the championship on Thursday night (3/7) at 8:15 in Farmer's Branch (12700 N. Stemmons.) Admission to all games is free and we'd love to see our DRAGONS out in full force.

Busy Weekend Just Past
First and foremost we would like to congratulate our repeat State Champion swimmers and divers. The boys have just completed their 3rd championship in a row while our girls finished off number 2. Both teams provided a dominating performance and left no doubt the Dragons are #1.
In addition, I would like to congratulate our Emerald Belles on their outstanding showing across the state. The Varsity Belles swept their routines in San Marcos and brought home several division and solo awards. The JV Belles performed well in Frisco and won Best in Class awards as well.
Our Wrestlers finished 4th and 5th at the UIL State Wrestling Championships. We are extremely proud of these young men as the performed admirably in Austin.
In addition, we had numerous students competing in competitions across the nation from Debate to Softball and we are proud of their efforts to represent the Dragon name.
Finally we do remind everyone last Friday was the end of the 6 week grading period. With the many absences we do need to encourage everyone to meet with their teachers to get their assignments completed quickly.

performances as well as brief comments from business, educator and parent
representatives. Our district is co-hosting this event with
the Grapevine-Colleyville and Keller school districts. Purchase a $10 t-shirt
at any CISD school and wear it to the rally. You may want to carpool to help
with on-site parking. Come see and hear the great things happening in our
public schools and get resources for how you can stay informed, stay involved
and be an advocate for our kids and our future! The program is from 7-8:30 p.m.
in the main gym at Grapevine HS.
See you there!

Lucky to be a DRAGON!
As I sit here and watch our Dragon swimmers it amazes me the kids we have. I'm pretty sure I just watched Dragon swimmers take the top 6 spots in one race. These kids could swim varsity on 99% of the teams in the state. It truly makes me realize how lucky I am to work with our kids.

Dragon Tribune Updated
Earlier today I got the opportunity to read the most up to date Dragon Tribune. I am so excited to see the work by our students each and every month. In this issue, a student writes about experiences at an Eagles concert, another writes about the variety of activities they're exposed to in school, and our students begin the discussion on creating a proper schedule to lead them toward college.
We hope you love the newspaper, please go to: www.dragontribune.com
