Dragon Tribune 3rd Edition

Just in time for the holidays, students have readied the next launch of The Dragon Tribune newspaper
This issue contains a series of related stories about students dealing with self-image from an unique point-of-view. It’s titled “Perfectly Imperfect.” We have another contribution from our German foreign exchange student who compares students in her high school in Germany to those in Southlake. And we have our first video posted to our Web site, something we couldn’t do when we were producing hard copies. The lyrics of this video were written by a staff member of the newspaper. His idea was to “rap” about the lifestyle of Southlake as his response to Thanksgiving.

But there’s more than these few highlights in this issue and we’ll have our fourth launch ready for you early in January.
Happy New Year and Thank You for supporting the writing of young students.

Craft Fair This Weekend

The 20th annual CHS/CSHS PTO Craft Fair is this Saturday and Sunday at CSHS. The fair has over 200 vendors selling a variety of items, and we are excited to welcome hundreds of shoppers throughout the weekend. We'd love to see each of our families attend this event.

All proceeds from the fair benefit our Project Graduation, a drug and alcohol free event designed to provide a fun and safe environment for our seniors to celebrate graduation.

Campus Excellence Committee

As we are now one six weeks into the school year we will begin to have our campus excellence committee meetings next week. I would once again like to invite a couple parents to participate on this committee. We are searching for a Freshmen and Sophomore parent as well as a person from a local business in CISD.

This committee is our site based committee and will do some work on our Campus Improvement Plan, Staff-Development, and student concerns at CHS. We love the work our committee provides and we'd be excited to see any parent participate. This year we will have at least four meetings: 10/10, 12/12, 2/13, and 4/10. The meetings will start at 3:45 daily and we'll be going for one hour.

Please contact Mr. Giamanco @ pj.giamanco@southlakecarroll.edu if you would like to participate.

Parents Invited To Review "Big Decisions" Health Curriculum

Starting this year, Carroll ISD has updated its school health curriculum at the request of parents to include information on healthy relationships and how to prevent disease and unplanned pregnancy through abstinence and other means. Studies have shown that this type of instruction gives teens the confidence to avoid risky behavior and make good choices. To complement this curriculum, CISD is hosting a parent-only session to offer a preview of the updated health curriculum and answer any questions that parents may have about this curriculum.

Who: Health parents
What: Discuss human sexuality curriculum “Big Decisions”
Where: CHS Lecture Hall (former art rooms on the northwest side of the building)
When: 6:30 PM, October 2nd, 2012

Teen pregnancy is a problem in Texas. In 2010, our state had the third highest rate of teen pregnancies in the U.S. Sixty-four of 1,000 births are to teenage mothers, higher than the national rate of 43 births to teenagers per 1,000 births nationally. Tarrant County has a teenage birthrate of 56 per 1,000 births, and our zip code does not make our kids immune to these issues.

I can assure you we love the great importance our families place on getting to know our teachers and our curriculum. The support you provide makes this job better for everyone at CHS.

Early Voting Continues In Carroll ISD

Early voting continues now through September 11 in the Carroll ISD two-cent tax ratification election. Registered voters can cast a ballot during early voting hours at Southlake Town Hall, third floor, 1400 Main Street, Southlake. Voting will take place on both Saturdays, with extended hours on September 8, 10 and 11. The polls will be closed on Sundays and on Labor Day. A complete list of early voting times is available on the district's website under the CarrollBudget.com icon.

Voters will decide whether or not to authorize the Board of Trustees to raise the Maintenance and Operations Tax Rate two pennies per $100 valuation - from $1.04 to $1.06 - which will generate about $1.1 million in local tax revenues to address the 2012-2013 operating deficit. If the election passes, all of the funds generated by the additional two cents would stay in Carroll ISD, and it would mean an increase of about $25 each year for the average homeowner in CISD.  If the election passes, the CISD deficit will be $2.8 million. If it does not pass, the deficit will be $3.9 million. Trustees have been considering a number of options to address the operating deficit. These options include using fund balance to cover the difference, changing scheduling, teaming and/or class sizes, program and/or positions cuts, the sale of land when market conditions are right, a shift of the fiscal year, etc.  Trustees gave a 1.5-cent debt service tax decrease for 2012–2013. Taxpayers will benefit from the debt service tax decrease regardless of the outcome of the September 15 special election. Election day voting will take place Saturday, September 15 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. In the Art Center of Carroll Senior High School, 1501 W. Southlake Blvd.

Allen Game Tickets

Good Afternoon All,

As of 12:45pm today, Dragon Stadium is completely sold out of all tickets.   Allen ISD is also completely sold out of tickets.

CHS and CSHS still have a few hundred adult and general admission tickets.

Curriculum Night Coming Up

Curriculum nights are scheduled at CHS each year during the first few weeks of school. This activity is designed for parents only (no students please). The meeting provides teachers with an important opportunity to visit with parents about grade-level and course curriculum, as well as classroom expectations. While we'd certainly love to sit and talk one on one with each parent we are limited in time. Please schedule those conferences individually with each teacher. We look forward to visiting with our wonderful parents on September 12, 2011 from 6:00 to 7:32 PM.

Please remember we tend to see about 1000 people arrive on a campus with limited parking. If you're concerned with finding a parking spot please arrive early. In addition, some people certainly may try to use DIS for parking, provided they do not have an event being planned.

We hope to see everyone soon.

First Day Morning Traffic

From the campus side I can say traffic was amazing at CHS. Thank you to all parents and students for making this successful. I know getting off of White Chapel was a little difficult and we'll work on this part soon.

Please remember class will start at 8:00 AM and we want our students to have enough time to get to class. Let us know if you have any questions.

West Nile Announcement

The City of Southlake will be holding a special meeting Monday evening, August 27, to discuss the possibility of aerial spraying for mosquitos. This is in response to Denton County’s decision to spray to help prevent the spread of West Nile Virus. A portion of the City of Southlake is in Denton County. To date, Southlake has had six cases of West Nile Virus, all affecting individuals who are elderly or have pre-existing conditions or weakened immune systems. The City has a story posted toMySouthlakeNews.com and is working jointly with Carroll ISD to help educate the public. Remember to spray your children with approved DEET mosquito repellants before they go out to bus stops and/or outdoors. While wearing long sleeves and pants to school may not be practical in August/September, parents are encouraged to protect students during after school activities and from dusk to dawn as necessary. Parents may send non-aerosol sprays or replleant wipes to the nurse’s office with instructions to re-spray students before after-school or outdoor activities. At this point, CISD will not alter outdoor activities or evening eventsbecause risks are minimal if personal protections are in place. The district is treating CISD property with briquettes from the city staff, but the district will not be handing supplies of DEET out to students. We are minimizing standing water where mosquitos might gather and will work cooperatively with the city to wipe down playground equipment should aerial spraying be approved. Secondary students bring repellant from home in their gym bags for evening competitions and outdoor events, but parents are asked not to give the repellant to younger children to spray themselves. This will help protect those students who are asthmatic and could react negatively to extensive sprays in the learning classroom.

Traffic Change...Please Review

Due to recent construction there will be a few changes to our traffic patterns at CHS. We would certainly like for all parents and students to review the link below from our campus webpage. This will be essential for us to make the transition sooner at CHS.

We certainly believe the changes will produce safer exits for all students and parents at CHS.

Traffic Pattern Review

Schedule Pick Up Reminder

Please remember on sophomore schedule pick up and on fish campus students can only pick up their own schedules.  Students and parents ofent ask if they could pick up/see a schedule of another student, this is certainly a confidentiality issue. In addition, parents may pick up schedules for their own student if their student isn't able to come.

Thank you and see you on the 17th.

Dragon Fish Camp and Sophomore Schedules 2012

While we are in the middle of construction at CHS we also felt it would be appropriate to begin to embark on the 2012-2013 school year and remind everyone of our start of school events.

Sophomores will begin our process at 10:00 AM, August 17, 2012. CHS will be handing schedules out at 10:00 and will continue doing so until 11:30. We would love to see all of our Dragons back at CHS to distribute these items.

Freshmen students will start Friday, August 17, 2012, in the afternoon at 1:00 PM with a reduced Fish camp. We will hand out schedules and provide tours of CHS. The event will be slightly less this year due to construction, but we do feel we will be able to answer many questions for our students. While we absolutely love our parents, this is student only event. The event is not mandatory but certainly a great way for our students to get used to everything on campus.

If you have questions please feel free to call CHS. SEE YOU in August!

In this latest launch, let me draw your attention to a wonderful feature story about a CHS sophomore student who just became Miss Teen Southlake 2012. Another student writes about taking her first flying lesson. A student writes about deciding to attend college in Scotland. And there’s a news story forecasting possible changes for next year’s homecoming dance.

Hope you enjoy this latest launch of student work.

No Valentines Deliveries

Please remember we would like to respect the educational environment at CHS and thus we will not be accepting any Valentines Day deliveries. We would certainly ask families and friends to address these items either before school or after school on 2/14.

Thank you and please feel free to call if you have any questions.

Sophomores and National Honor Society

Now that mid-year grades are finalized at CHS, the NHS advisor is starting to determine who is eligible for the National Honor Society.  Those eligible students will be sent a congratulatory letter at CHS indicating their eligibility based on scholarship alone.  Candidates will be given the opportunity to submit an information packet demonstrating the remaining criteria for National Honor Society membership, but eligibility does not guarantee membership!

If a student feels they are eligible and do not receive a letter after distribution, please speak to Ms. Cross.  It is your responsibility to be aware of the deadlines that are posted on the NHS website.  Students who do not turn in their information packets by the deadline will not be eligible to join NHS this year.

Good luck Dragons!

Email Concerns

Carroll ISD continues to have trouble with inbound and outbound external emails. Correspondences we are sending outside the district or those that we are trying to receive from someone outside the district are not going through.

We've been notified that it will likely be another 24 hours without external email service while we wait for a part to be delivered and installed. Please plan accordingly.

Dragon Sympathy

We are sad to inform our Dragon community of the death of Aaron Anderson. His sister Kelley, is a sophomore at Carroll High School and a member of our tennis team. Aaron is the son of Eubanks Intermediate School teacher Kim Anderson and Grant Anderson, a former CISD employee who now works at the Region XI Education Service Center. Aaron, a Carroll graduate from the class of 2010, was involved in an automobile accident in Wisconsin where he worked and attended college.

Our trained CISD counseling team will be available to assist employees and students at each campus as needed and for as long as they are needed. We do not have information yet on funeral arrangements, but will share details with our community as it becomes available.

Our sympathy is with the Andersons during this very difficult time. We appreciate your care and support for all those in the Dragon family affected by this tragedy.
