Dragon Tribune Up for Holiday Edition

Students in grades 9-12 present some enjoyable reading for your holidays.  Choose from stories about a new trampoline park opening in Southlake, a review of our city’s best burgers, a story about one of our non-coffee drinking students becoming a part-time Barista’s Apprentice and a feature story about Glenn Brasher who you’ve no doubt seen on the sidelines of every Dragon football game in recent memory. And, of course, there’s much more.

State Notices

The letter below was posted by Coach Ozee in regard to the State Championship game:

...do not for any reason park in the Wal-Mart parking lot. It seems that last week at the 3A game someone was dressed as a parking attendant and directed traffic into the Wal-Mart lot. Many cars were towed. Even if the parking attendant appears legitimate, don’t fall for it. Please see the parking advisory below from the City of Arlington. Also, please allow yourself plenty of time to park and exit the stadium as we are expecting huge crowds for all three games.

CISD will be on the North side of Cowboys Stadium. This is the Randol Mill Rd. side of the stadium. Aledo is the 12:00pm game and is also on the North side.

As I mentioned at booster club last Monday, the UIL and Cowboys Stadium controls every aspect of the operations for Saturday’s games. The security in and around the stadium will be increased as large crowds are expected.

If you have any questions regarding Saturday, feel free to shoot me an email at kevin.ozee@southlakecarroll.edu and either myself or one of our staff members will try to find an answer for you as soon as possible.

Take care and see you Saturday,

KO

Holiday Happenings

We had the wonderful opportunity to meet with a couple of families this morning asking about providing some holiday decorations to the CHS office. Before accepting these decorations we felt it would be appropriate to mention this for our entire school community.

If you have holiday decorations and would like to provide these to CHS during the upcoming or current holiday season we'd love to accept them. Please feel free to bring them to CHS at your convenience. If there are specifics for our using them please let us know as we want to honor each part of our community and all cultural needs.

Homecoming Notice

Parents and students as you know our Homecoming Dance will be next Saturday, October 29th at the Gaylord. This is a special event and is a school sponsored event and as such students are expected to abide by the student code of conduct. We all are looking forward to this special night and want all students to have a great time. Each year we have anywhere from 1800-2200 students that attend the HC Dance. With this in mind we need your help, please reiterate to your student we want them to have an awesome time and to dress and dance appropriately.

As you can imagine dances have changed just a bit since many of us attended these many years ago just as the music and style of dance has changed. We are and will remind kids to have a great time but please don't dance in a way that is inappropriate. The last thing we want to do is to embarrass them by having to ask them to stop or ultimately to leave.

If you would like to see a little bit of comedy form our CSHS students please watch this KCBY video.

Parents we would love to have you come out and chaperone the dance which starts at 7:30 and concludes at midnight. If you interested in chaperoning please contact either principal so we can add you to our list.

EOC Meeting Tonight Canceled

Out of sensitivity for those wishing to attend the services tonight, our planned meeting to explain End of Course exams will be rescheduled. Please remember we will also meet this Wednesday in the CHS library at noon and then again next week on October 12 at 6 PM. If a replacement date is added we will send the data to all families immediately.

We are sorry for the late notice but certainly believe it is more important to support our families tonight.

CHS Apology

Please accept our sincere apology for including a statement about the loss of a CISD student among other routine stories listed in the Dragon Diary this past weekend. As Principal, I do not believe this was an appropriate place to include comments about such a sensitive matter. I have put procedures in place to ensure this doesn't happen again, and appreciate your forgiveness and understanding. It was never anyone's intention to be insensitive about such a significant loss for the CHS family, but unfortunately, that's how it came across. Please know that we care deeply about those who are suffering and want only to help ensure effective communication of news affecting CHS students and staff. In the future, you can rest assured that announcements of this nature will be sent separately from weekly school news and approved by campus leaders before being broadcast to CHS families.

Carroll ISD To Host STAAR, EOC Meetings

Parents of current freshmen students enrolled at Carroll High School are invited to attend one of four public meetings designed to help parents learn more about the state end of course tests and how these tests will impact their children.

The meetings are scheduled for tonight at 6 p.m. in the CHS cafeteria; 6 p.m. October 3 in the CHS cafeteria; noon on October 5th in the CHS library; and 6 p.m. on October 12 in the CHS cafeteria.

Members of the district’s Teaching & Learning Services Department have prepared informational presentations on the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness or STAAR. Local officials say they are still waiting on some answers from the state about how the STAAR and EOC exams will be implemented, but parents need to be informed about how the new testing systems will affect their child now through graduation.

Parents are encouraged to attend just one of the four, repeat presentations. Information will be sent via letter and posted to the CISD website afterward for those parents unable to attend.

Once home side tickets are completed fans can still purchase visitor side tickets online or at the Dragon Stadium. As of this morning, we have approximately 2500 visitor tickets. However, all visitor side tickets purchased online or at the stadium must sit on the visitor side. There is no cross-over and security will monitor this very close. The tickets are marked for visitor side and anyone leaving the stadium will have a color coded stamp to indicate home or visitor side.

Curriculum Night on Horizon

Curriculum nights are scheduled at CHS each year during the first few weeks of school. This activity is designed for parents only (no students please). The meeting provides teachers with an important opportunity to visit with parents about grade-level and course curriculum, as well as classroom expectations. While we'd certainly love to sit and talk one on one with each parent we are limited in time. Please schedule those conferences individually with each teacher. We look forward to visiting with our wonderful parents on September 6, 2011 from 6:00 to 7:32 PM.

Please remember we tend to see about 1000 people arrive on a campus with limited parking. If you're concerned with finding a parking spot please arrive early. In addition, some people certainly will try to use DIS for parking, provided they do not have an event being planned.

We hope to see everyone soon.

Thank You CHS Dragons

Can you say amazing! We have said it a hundred times at CHS today. Our kids were amazing, our staff was amazing, and our parents were amazing. Today quite possibly might have been the best first day we've ever seen at CHS. You can't ask for a better place to spend every single day.

This DRAGON campus can't stop smiling.

First Day Procedures

On Monday students please follow these procedures to start your day:

1.       If a student KNOWS that he/she is in a 1st block class that meets at CSHS (i.e., a sophomore in basketball) the student should go to that class even though the class is not at CHS. This will include athletes and drill team students, etc.

2.       Coaches/directors, etc., will allow 1st block students to leave early enough after 1st block so that they can get to CHS in time to get their official schedule (on pink paper) from the gym at CHS.

3.       For students who receive their official pink schedule at CHS and learn that their first block class is at the other school (i.e., freshman who are taking French I 1st block at CSHS), the student will remain at CHS for 1st block - students will go to the cafeteria area.

4.       Teachers, will use pink schedules as official schedules for students on the first and second day of school.

Good luck Dragons as we approach 2011-2012 school year and call if you have questions.

Welcome Teachers

CHS was so happy to experience all of our teachers today. We started the day off with convocation at CSHS and finished with a staff development at CHS. We are so lucky to have such a respected bunch of teachers and cherish them daily.

If you want a good laugh, and yes we know it is blurry, check out the flash mob at convocation this morning.

Welcome to 2011 and 2012.

First Day is Amazing

While I'm watching our new Freshmen tour CHS and visit with each other I'm amazed again at how wonderful CHS is and the kids we have every single day. I have seen our Sophomores visit in the morning, our new students eat lunch at noon, and our Freshmen work through our Fish camp and pep rally all with smiles amazing to every person that passes. Thank you Dragons.

I'd also like to thank all of our parents for visiting CHS today to help with schedules, clothing and general assistance. A principal can't ask for more than our parents provide, you're our greatest assistance every day.

Tuesday, August 2, 2011

On-line Registration Open

Parents we would encourage you soon to login to your family access location and begin the on-line registration experience. As of our first day, CHS had 66 registrants and we would love to see that number double or triple today. Please do this soon so you can begin the process for your child and avoid many of the hand written forms later.

If you have questions feel free to phone CHS and we'll do all we can to assist.

Online Registration on Horizon

We hope your summer is off to a wonderful start! Thank you for an amazing school year at CHS. We have reviewed the Voice of the Dragon Survey and appreciate all of the positive comments. We are proud of the continuing improvement at CHS. We strive to be better each year and believe the comments of our families certainly assist in this process. As always, we will share the results with our teachers and staff in August.

We want to update you on the online registration that CISD will be conducting for 2011-2012 for all returning students. If you have a returning student, email Tracy Witt at tracy.witt@southlakecarroll.edu for CHS with the name of each student, grade, parent name and email address by June 30th. Then, later in the summer you will receive a CISD email with a user name and password that will give you access to the registration process. We expect returning students to begin registration on August 1st.

If you have questions about this process or anything else regarding the next school year, we are available during the summer P.J. Giamanco's email is pj.giamanco@southlakecarroll.edu

We look forward to seeing all Dragons in August at CHS!

Enjoy your break!

In addition, we would wish our Dragon Golfers good luck at the state golf tournament begininning Thursday morning in Austin. The Dragons are prepared for a first place finish at this tournament and we are hoping for another state championship.

Game Over Presentation

Parents, please be aware CHS will be using Thursday and Friday, May 12 and May 13, to present our Game Over presentation to our students. This event will include a mock drunk driving car accident on May 12 and an assembly on May 13. The assembly will include a video presentation of the accident and an individual speaking on the consequences of drunk driving on her family.

If your child could have concerns with either of these presentations please contact the school at your earliest convenience. This presentation is certainly impactful on our kids, unfortunately drunk driving could have impacted one of our students previously and we do not want them to be impacted additionally with this presentation.

TAKS Testing 2011

Please remember tomorrow is our first day of 10th grade TAKS testing for Math. We have a unique situation on this campus because 9th graders do not test tomorrow. If you have a 9th grader, they can arrive as late as 11:55 AM on Tuesday. If a 9th grader arrives at their usual reporting time, your child will have the opportunity to study or read in the cafeteria if he/she needs to arrive prior to the 11:55 reporting time. Busses will run on their regular schedule and four hours later for the late arrival.

Good luck to all of our Sophomores on this math TAKS test.

Hockey...National Title Runner-Up

Please take a moment to congratulate any of our varsity hockey players on their most recent trip to the US Hockey National Championship.

It is with great pleasure that we announce that Carroll High School is a 2010 NCEA Higher Performing School! We would like to offer our Congratulations to our students for their performance and a big thank you to our teachers for their commitment to excellence in education!

CHS was identified as Higher Performing based on the students' achievement on the spring 2010 Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills test.

In this issue we have a variety of student work for you to enjoy on a wide range of subjects. Our students have focused on: post holiday blues, local homes with holiday spirit, a Harry Potter extravaganza, college roomates, Charm School thoughts, rock climbing attempts in a short period of time, local gyms that fit your needs, and curing country phobia.

Cozy up with your laptop on a cold dreary day (we have those in abundance this month and next) and read work from the imaginations of students you have helped to grow and learn.

First Semester Almost Over

As we complete our final exams today we will finish our first semester.  It has been absolutely amazing to see everyone at CHS work so well.

Our kids have had an amazing first semester and accomplished a variety of tasks.  Our students performed an amazing musical, they have debated all over the nation, they have accomplished a variety on the athletic fields and on the courts, finally they're the best students we could dream on having. I'm certain to believe the second semester will continue to produce more amazing triumphs. We are proud to believe they have and will Protect the Tradition.

Our faculty continues to take giant leaps every day.  As we move toward a new testing requirement. our faculty is continuing to redefine our curriculum and update our methods for assessment.  Please know this will always be a continuing process and our teachers will continue to work to provide an amazing education for our kids.  If anyone has questions we truly believe you need to speak with the teacher first and foremost.  We have the greatest teachers and believe they're the first cog to Excellence in Education.

Have a wonderful long weekend and look forward to an excellent second semester.

Make Education a Priority

Carroll ISD has joined various districts across Texas to encourage Texas Legislators to Make Education A Priority!

The district hopes to collect a letter and/or postcard for each student enrolled in Carroll ISD - 7,676 - to hand deliver to Austin during the 82 Legislative session. Please remember, all family members can sign the cards and/or write their own personal notes. We would also like to encourage everyone to send personal email to your friends & neighbors to encourage them to write. Every member of our community can do a postcard, an actual letter, or an email to: Every Child Counts.  CHS has a dropoff box in the office and others are located around the community.

If you would like more specific information please click on: Make Education a Priority.

Final Exams

Please remember our final exams will be this Wednesday through Friday. The schedule is posted on the school website. Good luck to all students.

Each day we will not be offering lunch at CHS.

In addition, our students will have off next Monday and Tuesday.

New schedules will be handed out, before school, once we return. These should be posted electronically on Tuesday evening. Due to some movement in programs our master schedule has had to change recently. We are certainly sorry for these late changes but believe it will help our students have smaller class sizes.

Welcome Back

First, we are so excited to see everyone return to CHS happy and healthy. I hope your break was as successful as mine...I can honestly say I will not be moving to Chicago anytime soon, it was great to see my family in one location but the cold was too much for this principal.

As we return let me remind everyone FINAL EXAMS are coming up next Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.  Please check the schedule on our campus homepage.  We will not offer lunch any of the 3 days and certainly hope our students come prepared to complete the first semester.

Also please remember in order to average pass a class for the year the student must pass the second semester.  This is a change from previous policy but we believe our students will be just as successful this way too.
